4E Error on a Samsung Washing Machine — Water Supply Fault

Samsung's 4E (shown as 4C on newer panels) is the fill-timeout code: the machine opened the valves and waited, but water never arrived in time. Nine times out of ten it's supply-side, not the machine.

What This Code Is Telling You

4E/4C is Samsung's water supply error — functionally identical to LG's IE. The board energises the inlet valve solenoids, the pressure sensor should report rising water level, and when it doesn't within the timeout, the cycle aborts with 4E. Start with the plumbing before suspecting the machine. In hard-water homes the mesh screens want a rinse every few months — part of the routine in our maintenance guide.

Common Causes Behind This Code

  • Tap closed or half-open — check after any plumbing work, painting, or moving house.
  • Kinked, twisted or crushed inlet hose — the machine's own weight against the wall is the usual culprit.
  • Clogged inlet valve mesh — hard-water sediment and pipe debris collect on the valve screen.
  • Failed inlet valve solenoid — clicks but passes no water, or stays silent entirely.
  • Pressure sensor / air-chamber fault — tub fills but the board never learns about it.
  • Frozen or low-pressure supply — winter mornings and overhead-tank buildings both produce genuine slow fills.

Safe DIY Checks Before Calling a Technician

Tap & Hose Sweep

Fully open the tap; straighten both hoses end to end; retry the cycle.

Clean the Mesh Filters

Tap off, hose off at the machine end, extract and rinse the small mesh screens in the valve inlet.

Swap Hose Test

If one inlet works and the other doesn't, swap the hoses at the tap — the fault following the hose points to supply; staying put points to the valve.

Book if Valves Are Silent

No click, no hum, no water after a reset = electrically dead valve or sensor circuit. Technician territory. Valve work is priced on our pricing page.

If the code returns after these checks, the fault is inside the machine — valves, sensors, locks or the control board need proper instruments. Book a doorstep diagnosis (₹400, adjusted in your bill) and we'll identify the failed part before quoting anything.

4E States Across Samsung's Multi-Valve Fill System

Samsung's fill system is several solenoid paths behind one panel code, so which program fails tells you which path failed. Match the pattern below, and the valve, chamber or sensor branch usually identifies itself before any instruments come out. Most of these repairs are same-day jobs under our front-load repair service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about our washing machine service, repair process, warranty and pricing.

4E or 4C — which is it?

They're the same error. Samsung moved from 4E to 4C lettering on newer panels; both mean water supply fault with identical causes.

Why does 4E appear mid-cycle instead of at the start?

Multi-inlet cycles (rinse with softener flush, hot washes) open a second valve path. The cold path works; the second path — often a clogged mesh on one valve — times out mid-cycle.

I cleaned everything and 4E still shows. What's next?

Then the fault is the valve solenoid or the pressure-sensing side — both need multimeter testing and, for the sensor, an air-chamber check. That's a diagnosis visit; the valve itself is a same-visit replacement. Ballpark figures sit in our repair cost guide.

How does the air-chamber sensing on a Samsung differ from a float system?

Samsung reads water level by trapping air in a small chamber connected to the pressure sensor — rising water compresses the air, and the sensor converts that pressure into a level reading. No float to jam, but the chamber and its thin hose can clog with detergent sludge. When the chamber blocks, the tub fills visibly while the sensor reports nothing, and 4E follows.

4E shows only on warm and hot programs. Why just those?

Hot programs open the hot-fill valve path, a separate solenoid with its own mesh screen on dual-inlet models. Cold fills work perfectly because that path is healthy; the hot path's clogged mesh or dead solenoid times out and shows 4E. This path-specific pattern is one of the most reliable valve diagnoses we perform.

What's the bucket-flow test and when should I run it?

With the tap off, disconnect the inlet hose at the machine end, aim it into a bucket and open the tap fully. A strong, even stream proves the supply is fine and shifts suspicion to the valve or sensor; a weak trickle indicts the plumbing. Run it once before any diagnosis call — it takes two minutes and cleanly splits the fault space.

4E appeared immediately after I replaced the inlet hose myself. Related?

Very likely — two common reassembly errors cause it: the small mesh filter left out (letting debris reach the valve seat) or a hose washer misaligned so the flow restricts. Also confirm the tap was reopened fully. Undo the connection, verify the mesh and washer, and retry before assuming the valve failed by coincidence.

Can hard water scale inside the valve itself, not just the mesh?

Yes — over years, mineral scale narrows the valve's internal passages and stiffens the solenoid plunger, so even a clean mesh passes too little water to beat the fill timeout. Descaling washes slow the process but can't reverse it. The lasting fix is a valve assembly replacement, which our valve replacement service completes in one visit.

Which other brands' codes match Samsung's 4E?

LG's IE/1E is the same fill timeout with the same part list, Bosch writes it as E17, Whirlpool as LF, and Haier shows E4 on many models. If you're comparing quotes or guides across brands, any of those pages describe an identical fault: LG IE is the closest twin.

Why does my machine show 4E mid-cycle during the rinse, not the first fill?

The rinse phase opens yet another valve path — the one that flushes softener or sprays the load. A machine that fills for wash but fails at rinse has a healthy main solenoid and a failing third path, which points firmly at a multi-way valve assembly rather than the tap or hose. Note the exact phase for the technician; it halves the diagnosis.

4E is Samsung's fill fault — the same family as E1 and IE across brands. Supply and valve hardware are covered by the inlet-valve service, and the Samsung-specific mapping sits in the 4E decode.
