Washer Not Draining
Drain codes and standing water share the same root causes.
Open guide →5E (5C on newer panels) is Samsung's drain-timeout code: the pump ran, but the water level didn't drop as expected. It's the drain-side twin of 4E — and the most common Samsung service call we get. Water left standing also breeds mould — the cleanup side is our deep-cleaning service.
5E/5C means the machine couldn't empty within its allowed time. The drainage path is short — tub → filter/trap → drain pump → hose — and a blockage or dead pump anywhere on it produces this code. It pairs with our not-draining guide, which covers the same fault without the code display.
| Brand | What it means | Usual trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung | 5E/5C — drain timeout | Filter clog, pump failure — Samsung service |
| LG | Equivalent is OE (drain error) | Same drainage path |
| Bosch | Equivalent is E18 | Filter and pump clogs |
| Whirlpool | Equivalent is F21 (Long Drain) | Filter, pump, pressure switch |
Unplug. Front loaders: open the bottom flap and slowly unscrew the trap, catching water in a tray. Top loads: use the drain hose or bail the tub.
Remove lint, coins and debris from the trap and spin the pump impeller with a finger — it should spin freely with slight resistance.
Straighten kinks; blow through the hose to confirm the house standpipe isn't blocked.
If it drains, you're done. If the pump hums without pumping or stays silent, book a visit — the pump or its circuit is the fault. Pump jobs are same-visit — current rates on the pricing page.
If the code returns after these checks, the fault is inside the machine — valves, sensors, locks or the control board need proper instruments. Book a doorstep diagnosis (₹400, adjusted in your bill) and we'll identify the failed part before quoting anything.

The drain path is the shortest system in the machine, which makes 5E one of the most precisely diagnosable codes. Each state below maps to one component between the tub and the standpipe.
| Code state | Probable cause | Component to test | Fix path |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5E, pump humming | Impeller jammed by debris | Trap chamber, impeller, sump hose | Clear debris; pump often survives |
| 5E, pump silent | Electrical or winding failure | Pump connector and motor | Pump replacement |
| 5E with slow-but-running drain | Partial blockage or worn impeller | Hose bore, impeller vanes | Flush hose; replace weak pump |
| Tub empties, 5E still shows | Level misreported | Pressure chamber and sensor | Level-sensing test |
| 5E recurring monthly | Continuous debris source | Whole path, plus dosing habits | Trace the shedding item; fix dosing |
The legacy-panel spelling of this fault is decoded in the SE guide, and the same path without a code display is covered step by step in our not-draining guide.

Every 4–6 weeks in normal use, monthly if you wash pet bedding or work clothes. A clean trap is the single cheapest 5E prevention there is.
No — slow drain is early pump strain. The pump is working harder than designed; it will hard-fail as a 5E within weeks. Cleaning the trap and hose now usually restores full flow. If it doesn't, the likely pump work is costed in our repair cost guide.
Something is shedding debris continuously — a disintegrating detergent scoop bag, fabric softener sludge, or a partially blocked hose. We trace the recurring clog source during a diagnosis visit rather than treating symptoms. Photos of what the trap releases, sent through our contact page, usually name the shedding source.
Samsung expects the pressure sensor to report the tub empty within a fixed window — several minutes of continuous pumping. A pump that moves even a trickle may run the clock out and trigger 5E without ever stopping, which is why a 'working but slow' pump is still a failing pump. Timing the drain phase against a full tub is part of our diagnosis.
Sound and feel separate them. A jammed impeller gives a humming pump that moves nothing; unplug, open the trap chamber and spin the impeller by finger — rough, gritty or blocked movement means debris, and clearing it may save the pump. A silent pump with voltage present means burnt windings, and the unit needs replacement — our drain pump replacement page covers both outcomes.
The sump hose is the short ribbed section between the tub outlet and the pump inlet — the one part of the drain path most owners never see. Socks, bra wires and lint clumps settle there after slipping past the trap, so a 'clean filter, still blocked' machine often has its clog in this hose. It's checked with the pump chamber open during diagnosis.
Yes, the longer it sits. Stagnant water breeds mould in the tub and gasket, feeds the smells that are hard to remove, and keeps the pump seals submerged. Drain manually via the trap or emergency hose as soon as the code appears, and treat the 5E as the early warning it is rather than leaving the tub full for days.
Either debris from elsewhere in the drain path jammed the new impeller, or the original fault was never the pump — a lazy pressure sensor produces identical 5Es while the pump drains perfectly. Ask for the old pump to be shown and the level-sensing side to be tested; our sensor testing service closes that loop.
LG writes the same drain timeout as OE, Whirlpool as F21, Bosch as E18, and older Samsung panels as SE. All describe one short path — trap, pump, hose — failing at some point. Cross-reference the SE guide for legacy panels or the Bosch E18 page for the German-platform view.
It can. Regular powder in a front loader, or any detergent over-dosed, produces suds and residue that mix with lint into a paste in the trap and sump hose. HE-formulated detergent at the correct dose leaves far less to collect. If your 5Es cluster after hot washes or softener-heavy loads, dosing is likely feeding the clog cycle.
Error codes are clues, not verdicts — the same family of faults appears under different codes across brands. These related codes, symptoms and services complete the diagnosis.
5E is Samsung's drain timeout — pump, filter or hose failing the flow test. Hardware renewal happens via the pump service, and symptom-level drainage fixes in the drainage guide.
